Gutter Cleaning in Bethesda, North Bethesda & Chevy Chase

Gutter and downspout cleaning done by roofers, which means we also check the roof edge, flashing and fascia while we are up there.

Why gutter cleaning matters under mature trees

Neighborhoods across Bethesda, North Bethesda and Chevy Chase are known for their large oaks, maples and tulip poplars. Leaves, seed pods, twigs and shingle granules fill gutters quickly, and a clogged gutter overflows against fascia, siding and the foundation. In winter, a gutter full of wet debris freezes solid, adding weight and making ice dam backups worse.

What every cleaning includes

  • Hand-clearing all gutters and bagging debris
  • Flushing every downspout and clearing clogs
  • Checking pitch, seams, hangers and fascia, with problems photographed
  • A quick look at the roof edge, valleys and visible flashing
  • Clean-up of debris on walks and beds

When we find loose hangers, leaks or damaged sections, we tell you before doing any gutter repair. Nothing is added without your approval.

How often to clean gutters

SituationSuggested frequency
Few or no overhanging treesOnce a year, in late fall
Some tree coverTwice a year, late spring and late fall
Heavy tree cover or pine needlesTwo to three times a year, or consider gutter guards

Combine fall gutter cleaning with a roof maintenance visit to get the roof ready for winter in one appointment. If your gutters are undersized or failing, see gutter installation.

A two-visit year under the Bethesda tree canopy

The mature canopy that makes neighborhoods like Edgemoor, Wood Acres, Bradley Hills, Glen Echo Heights and Luxmanor so pleasant also means gutters here fill twice a year, not once. Spring brings oak catkins, maple samaras, tulip-poplar litter and a heavy pollen load that rain turns into a dense paste in the bottom of the trough and packs into the outlets. The fall drop then runs unusually long, because the oaks hold their leaves well after the maples have finished, often into December. A single cleaning booked for mid-October is scheduled to miss the heaviest part of the leaf fall, which is why so many homeowners find their gutters full again in January.

Clearing the trough is only part of the job. On many older local lots the downspouts do not discharge onto the lawn at all; they drop into underground lines that run to the street, to a drywell or to a rear drainage swale, and those lines collect the same debris out of sight. When one blocks, water backs up at the elbow and pours over the gutter right against the foundation, which is a common and expensive cause of wet basements in this area. We check that water actually flows all the way out, not just that the gutter looks clean from the ladder, and we flag any line that needs to be cleared or re-routed.

The visit before the first hard freeze matters most. Debris sitting at the outlet traps meltwater at the eave during a thaw, which is exactly what turns a cold snap into an ice dam and pushes water back under the shingles. Cleaning is also the cheapest inspection you will ever get: from the ladder we see loose or pulled hangers, separated end joints, rotted fascia and failing drip edge that belong on a short gutter repair list, along with lifted shingles and tired flashing at the roof edge. Pairing cleaning with seasonal roof maintenance covers both in one trip, a full roof inspection is the next step if what we see warrants it, and if your gutters are undersized for the roof they serve, no cleaning schedule will fix that, which is a conversation about gutter installation. All three of our gutter services work to the same two-season calendar.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to clean gutters?

Late fall, after most leaves have dropped and before freezing weather, is the most important cleaning. A spring cleaning clears seed pods and catkins.

Do gutter guards mean I never need cleaning?

No. Guards reduce how often you need cleaning, but debris still builds up on top of and inside many guard types. Plan on periodic checks.
