Shingle roofs are systems
The shingles you see are the last layer of a system: the deck, drip edge, ice-and-water membrane, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and ridge cap all have to work together. Most early shingle roof failures come from those hidden layers, such as poor ventilation cooking shingles from below, reused flashing, or missing ice barrier at the eaves, not from the shingles themselves.
- Roof deck: plywood or OSB sheathing on the rafters. Soft or rotted sections are replaced during tear-off.
- Drip edge: metal edge that steers water off the deck and into the gutter.
- Ice-and-water membrane: self-adhered waterproofing at the eaves (and valleys) where ice dams and wind-driven rain get in.
- Synthetic underlayment: secondary water barrier over the rest of the deck, lapped over the membrane.
- Architectural shingles: installed to the manufacturer’s nailing and exposure specifications so the warranty stays valid.
- Ridge vent: lets warm, moist attic air escape at the peak.
- Soffit vents: let outside air into the attic under the eaves.
- Attic airflow: balanced intake and exhaust keeps the deck cool and dry, extending shingle life and reducing ice dams.
Choose the right service
- Shingle roof repair: missing or lifted shingles, leaks at flashing, valleys and vents
- Shingle roof replacement: complete tear-off and new roof system for a roof at the end of its life
- Shingle roof installation: new construction, additions, dormers and garages
Not sure which you need? A roof inspection will tell you.
How local weather shapes a shingle roof’s life
Shingle roofs in southern Montgomery County age unevenly, and knowing which slope is failing is most of the diagnosis. South and west-facing planes absorb the heaviest heat and UV load and go brittle, shed granules and crack along the nail line years ahead of the rest of the roof. North-facing planes, shaded by the mature canopy over neighborhoods like Edgemoor, Wood Acres and Bradley Hills, have the opposite problem: they stay damp, grow the dark algae streaking that is purely cosmetic, and grow moss that is not, because moss holds water against the shingle and lifts its edge until wind can get beneath it.
The sealant strip bonding each course to the one below is the local failure point that surprises people. It softens in July heat and stiffens in January cold, and after enough cycling it stops re-bonding, so a thunderstorm gust can break shingles loose while they still lie flat and look untouched from the driveway. They then leak during an ordinary rain weeks or months later, which is why so many homeowners insist there was no storm. The practical consequence is that a shingle roof here should be evaluated by hand across the slope rather than by looking for visible gaps, and that specification matters as much as product: an ice barrier at the eaves and valleys for freeze-thaw, balanced soffit-to-ridge ventilation, algae-resistant granules on shaded slopes, and kick-out flashing wherever a roof plane dies into a wall.
From there the right service follows the extent of the damage. Isolated lifted, cracked or missing shingles, failed pipe boots and flashing at a single chimney or sidewall are shingle roof repair. Granule loss, curling and brittleness across every slope, or leaks recurring in several places at once, mean the roof has reached the end of its service life and the honest answer is shingle roof replacement. New construction, additions, dormers and pop-tops are shingle roof installation, where the hard part is tying new shingles into a sun-faded existing roof. If you are not sure which applies, a roof inspection answers it slope by slope, and keeping the shaded slopes and valleys clear through gutter cleaning and roof maintenance is what extends whatever life the roof has left.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between architectural and 3-tab shingles?
Architectural shingles are laminated, thicker and textured, with generally higher wind ratings. 3-tab shingles are a flat, single layer. Architectural shingles are the industry standard for re-roofing today.
