Gutters protect more than the roof

Gutters carry roof runoff away from fascia boards, siding, window frames, basement walls and landscaping. Undersized, sagging or poorly pitched gutters overflow in heavy summer storms and freeze into ice dams in winter. In a neighborhood with mature trees, they also clog fast. A well-designed system is sized for the roof area, pitched correctly and drains to the right places.

Gutter options

5-inch K-style seamless aluminumCommon standard for many homes
6-inch K-style seamless aluminumMore capacity for large or steep roofs and long runs; a common upgrade

What our installation includes

  • Fascia inspection and repair of any rotted boards before hanging
  • Seamless runs formed on site, with corners and end caps sealed
  • Correct pitch toward downspouts, and hidden hangers spaced for snow and ice loads
  • Drip edge checked so roof water lands in the gutter, not behind it
  • Downspouts placed to discharge away from the foundation, with extensions or connections to existing drain lines

Replacing your roof? Installing gutters right after a roof replacement lets us coordinate drip edge and fascia work. Already have gutters that just need attention? See gutter repair.

Sizing gutters for the way it rains here

Rain in the mid-Atlantic arrives in bursts rather than drizzle. Summer thunderstorms and the remnants of tropical systems put down a great deal of water in a short time, and that, not the annual total, is what a gutter has to be sized for. Gutters are sized from the roof area draining to them, the pitch of that roof and the local rainfall intensity, and a 5-inch trough with two small downspouts on a large, steep roof can be over capacity and spilling even when it is perfectly clean. On big planes and steep pitches we specify 6-inch K-style gutters with 3x4 downspouts and add outlets rather than asking one downspout to carry half the house. Oversized outlets also clog far less readily under the local debris load, which reduces how often gutter cleaning becomes urgent.

Where the water goes once it leaves the gutter matters just as much. Many lots in Bethesda, North Bethesda and Chevy Chase slope toward the house, toward a neighbor, or down toward the stream valleys, and plenty of older properties have underground drain lines whose condition nobody has checked in decades. We look at the grade and the existing discharge before quoting, then carry water well away from the foundation with buried lines, long extensions or a drywell as the site requires. Done properly this is a basement-dryness project as much as a roofing one, and it prevents the fascia and siding damage that chronic overflow causes, which otherwise turns into gutter repair and siding work.

Finally, style and approvals. Half-round gutters with round downspouts, in aluminum or copper, suit the older architecture in Chevy Chase and Edgemoor in a way K-style does not, and in the Chevy Chase Village Historic District changes to materials visible from the public right-of-way are reviewed, so the choice is worth settling before ordering. Many HOA communities specify color. The most economical time to install any of this is during a reroof, when the drip edge is off and the roof edge is open and the gutter and the roof can be detailed as one system, which is why we usually raise it when quoting a roof replacement or shingle roof replacement. Gutter guards can help under heavy tree cover, but only when matched to the debris here and installed without lifting the roof edge.

Roof takeaway: Deep, long-lasting snow cover is the classic setup for ice dams and gutter damage. Gutters loaded with ice can pull away from fascia boards.

Frequently asked questions

What size gutters do I need?

It depends on roof area, pitch and how the roof planes drain. Many homes do fine with 5-inch gutters, while large, steep or tree-covered roofs often benefit from 6-inch gutters and larger downspouts. We size the system during the estimate.

Are gutter guards worth it?

Under heavy tree cover they can significantly reduce how often gutters need cleaning, but every guard still needs occasional attention. We can install guards and still offer periodic gutter cleaning.

Do I need a permit for new gutters?

Montgomery County’s homeowner permit guide lists gutters and downspouts among work that most likely does not need a county permit. HOA, municipal and historic district rules can still apply.
